i believe its a little bit complicated this way.

944 model year 1983

WPOZZZ94ZDN400001-49999 european cars or RoW
WPOAAO940DN450001-99999 USA & Canada

if its a 944 turbo (951) then the 8th digit becomes 5 and the 12th becomes 1 in all markets.

Why dont you do it. I think the info is more than enough.
