In 2009, I wrote an article about developing a front clip mold that would yield a lightweight, streamlined (no headlamps or fog lamps) front clip for the 928.

That article is here:

The part is finished, and it has turned out very well.

Where the original hood, front bumper cover, and two fenders weigh 58 pounds, this composite piece weighs 31.5 pounds, for a 26.5 pound weight savings off the nose of the race car.

In addition (and part of what I was thinking when I made it) - if you are racing the 928 there may come a day when you rumple a fender or hood panel. And if you looks around, spare fenders and hoods are EXPENSIVE.

This can making racing your 928 a little less expensive, the engine easier to access, and take another 26 pounds off the car to boot. I have had the front clip removavble on my track car for several years now, and will never go back to the old way again. The access to the front suspension, brakes, and engine are incredible when the clip is off.

Somebody will ask about Carbon Fiber. I was trying to keep with the 2nd design objective: cheaper than replacing stock parts". Yes, I can have my fiberglasser make this in CF if you like. It will weigh half as much (16 lbs) and cost 3X as much ($3,600). I do not offer it in CF on my website.
